Burrus House Inn Waterfront Suites

Waterfront suites on Roanoke Island, minutes from Manteo's downtown and centuries of history

About

Burrus House Inn Waterfront Suites sits along US-64 on Roanoke Island, a short distance from Manteo's walkable downtown waterfront district on Shallowbag Bay. Roanoke Island is the Outer Banks' historic anchor rather than its beach strip, with a compact waterfront town in Manteo that looks and feels different from the beach towns to the east. It's also where the story of English settlement in North America begins: in the 1580s, colonists here attempted the first permanent New World settlement, then disappeared without a confirmed explanation — a mystery that remains unresolved to this day.

On Roanoke Island

  • Reached from the beach towns by crossing the Washington Baum Bridge at Whalebone Junction
  • Close to the north-end cluster of Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, Elizabethan Gardens, and the Lost Colony outdoor drama at the Waterside Theatre
  • A short drive from downtown Manteo's shops, restaurants, and Roanoke Island Festival Park

As a vacation rental offering suite-style accommodations, the property gives travelers more room to spread out than a standard hotel floor plan — useful for stays centered on exploring the island's history rather than beach time. For current availability, rates, and specific unit details, contact the inn directly at (252) 475-1636 or through its website.

This 12 room boutique hotel is exquisite. I highly recommend you stay, but I must insist you don’t go through Expedia or other booking platform but their actual site. This particular hotel is worth getting to know in a first hand way. They will make your stay special given the opportunity. The rooms are spacious clean and very laid out. The breakfast pastries, yogurt and fruit are quite sufficient and delicious and the afternoon wine and snacks were very appreciated in transition from beach to dinner. There was a family having a retreat that held about half the suites, and 2 other suites besides ours with couples and still the space was open for enough that we all had plenty of room to enjoy. I would return with friends, family or romantic partner: A little gem of a place.

What struck us initially was the ease of check in. We arrived at 7 PM. Everything was waiting for us. Absolutely no worries. The suite was the best we have ever been in. The location was fabulous. We love to walk and the Historic District of Manteo was an easy walk. Nice touches by the Burris House was Wine and Cheese in the afternoon. In the morning coffee was jus5 right as well as the breakfast offerings. We highly recommend staying at the Burris House.

I enjoyed my stay immensely. The room was spotless and everything I needed was supplied. Housekeeping and the Innkeeper was always available and very accommodating. The views of the sound were beautiful and the location was very convenient to downtown Manteo as well as the oceanfront. It was very quaint and charming. The mattress, pillows and linens were great quality and extremely comfortable. No detail was overlooked! The only thing I would change is to have more countertop space in the bathroom. The pedestal sink was nice, but there was not enough space to set toiletries or a cup of coffee. Otherwise, everything was perfect! I will return many times.

Burrus House Inn had a great location and the room we selected had fantastic views! Highly recommend staying at this location. The Inn keeper was very friendly, accommodating, and provided good recommendations as well.
