Location on the Island

Buxton sits roughly midway down Hatteras Island, part of the string of villages connected by NC-12, the single road running the length of the seashore. The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse — the tallest brick lighthouse in the United States, moved inland in 1999 as erosion closed in — is a short drive away, though it's currently closed to climbing while the Park Service addresses a cast-iron bracket issue found during restoration. Continuing south on NC-12 leads to Hatteras village, departure point for the free ferry to Ocracoke Island.

We only stayed one night at the motel and had a room with a sea view, practically on the first row. Check-in was easy, however, the office is on the other side of the street, which is quite busy. The initial impression of the hotel's location is stunning. Unfortunately, the rooms are very run-down. Construction work was underway at the hotel, and there was building material and scrap metal lying around everywhere. The waves were quite rough during the night. It was a bit unnerving when the waves were crashing against the building and you were surrounded by water. The building survived the night, and so did we :) It was definitely a bit of an adventure. The pool across the street has also seen better days. No loungers, no parasols, nothing at all... we won't be coming back. A request to the hotel owner: please post better pictures online and offer something more than just the view for that kind of money.
