Cape Pines Motel

A straightforward NC-12 motel in Buxton, close to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and seashore beaches

About

Cape Pines Motel sits directly on NC-12 in Buxton, the Hatteras Island village built up around the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. It's a straightforward place to sleep for travelers headed to the lighthouse grounds, the National Park Service visitor center, or the seashore beaches that run along this stretch of Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

Buxton sits roughly in the middle of the island's strung-out village chain — Avon and the Rodanthe-Waves-Salvo villages lie north, Frisco and Hatteras village (departure point for the free ferry) lie south, all connected by the same two-lane NC-12. That's worth keeping in mind here more than almost anywhere else on the Outer Banks: NC-12 does wash out and close during storms, a real and recurring feature of life on Hatteras Island rather than a one-time event, so it's worth checking road conditions before and during a hurricane-season visit (roughly August through October).

The lighthouse itself — the tallest brick lighthouse in the country, moved inland in 1999 to escape encroaching erosion — is currently closed for climbing due to a cast-iron bracket issue found during restoration, so plan on viewing it from the grounds rather than climbing to the top.

Air conditioner did not work good...we had no room service to come clean our room at all getting there Thursday to Sunday. Dirty towels had to stay laying on the floor..and trash can full..Office opened 9am and closed 9pm making it hard to call being we stayed out early and came in late most days. Bathroom very small could not put toiletrie items out anywhere except in bag we brought them in away from bathroom where we needed it to be. Location was great. Parking lot very small and if you have a big vehicle hard to park. Sent email to Hotel regarding issues just to update them and have not heard back as the day of check out we left early before Office opened.

Booked this motel and it was a great choice. Two king beds and a pull out futon. Kitchen area with pots and pans. Refrigerator and oven/stove. Coffeemaker. TVs that actually let you log into your streaming services. Pool was nice. Cute little place to stay.

It was a really great stay, but the house we got, the bathroom and the bedroom doors can’t close that it looked broken or old, but it was clean! And everything we needed was provided. It was good!
