Colonial Inn is an independently owned motel at 3329 S Virginia Dare Trail — Beach Road — in Nags Head, on the same corridor that runs along the ocean past Jockey's Ridge State Park and the rest of town's beach strip. Beach Road here runs a couple of blocks over from Croatan Highway (US-158), so you're close to the main strip's restaurants and shops without sitting right on the four-lane. There's no corporate branding or resort-style amenities bundled into the rate — just a straightforward motel stay on one of the northern Outer Banks' main beach-facing roads.

The front desk keeps hours from 8am to 10pm daily, so time your check-in accordingly if you're rolling in after dinner. The rooms weren't fancy, and the parking area was small, but the rooms were cheaper than most, and it was on the beach. The employees all seemed nice.

This place needs a lot of help. The room was large, but dirty and run down. Kitchen area was unusable- appliances were outdated and dirty. Bathroom was super small and outdated. Only positive is the location. .

Stayed in an "beach front" front room but was more like an "ocean view" room. (Reasoning behind the 4 star review for the room category.) Which for me and my daughter (7) it was perfect. We shared a king size bed. Service category was given a 4 star review because we were given towels daily without having to ask. They would be bagged up and waiting out side our door by noon. Location category was given a 5 star because a 7-11 convenience store is less than 1/2 mile away, one of the best & busiest ice cream stores ( Sirfin Spoon) was literally across the street, and next door (neighbor status) is Nags Head Fishing Pier, which has just undergone a major renovation. Our stay was so perfect we added another day and stayed from Sunday 8/16/26 -8/21/2026. (Originally was due to depart on 8/20/2026)

Extremely disappointing experience. The rooms advertised online looked completely different from what we were actually given. The room we received felt more like a prison cell than the accommodations shown in the listing, and we couldn't even bring ourselves to spend one night there. We originally booked three nights, but after seeing the actual room, we decided to leave immediately. Despite not staying even a single night, the property refused to refund us for even one of the three nights. Be very careful relying on the photos shown online, because in our experience, they were absolutely not representative of the room we actually received. I would not recommend staying here.
