Getting Here

Ocracoke has no bridge or road connecting it to the rest of the Outer Banks, so every visitor arrives by boat. Most people take the free NC ferry from Hatteras village, about an hour across the sound, though longer toll ferries from Cedar Island or Swan Quarter on the mainland — roughly 2.25 hours each — are also options.

Planning Your Stay

Because a ferry is the only way on or off the island, Ocracoke is especially exposed during hurricane season, which runs June through November, with the real risk concentrated in August through October. If you're booking during those months, keep an eye on ferry schedules and evacuation notices — this island suspends service and orders evacuations more readily than almost anywhere else on the Outer Banks.

My fiancé and I just spent a long weekend at the Crews Inn and absolutely loved it! This quaint bed and breakfast perfectly encapsulates Ocracoke. Alton was kind and had breakfast and coffee ready promptly every morning. The location was the perfect walking and biking distance to the majority of restaurants and bars. We stayed in the Captain's Quarters on the 3rd floor and loved how quiet and separate this space was from the rest of the house. We will definitely be returning to the Crews Inn on our next trip to the island.

We stayed for several days earlier this year. The only negative for our stay was it was too short. We loved everything about our stay. It felt as if I’d walked into some of the big old houses I remember being in as a child. We loved the room the porches but especially the setting of the house. Our host was like speaking to an old friend. We definitely want to go back, stay as long as we can and as often as we can!! To the negative responses I’ve read I can only guess they were looking for something totally different than we were. We could not have been happier with our stay and thank our host from the bottom of our hearts for not changing a thing.

A Hidden Gem Full of Heart and Nostalgia Staying at Cews Inn felt like stepping back into my grandmother’s house — warm, welcoming, and full of charm. Tucked away from the hustle and bustle, it’s truly a hidden gem. Waking up to the smell of Ms. Pat’s coffee each morning brought a comforting sense of home. The nostalgic farmhouse feel, the peaceful backyard with its constant breeze, and the stunning flowers all added to the magic. Every detail felt thoughtful and serene. We loved absolutely everything about our stay and can’t wait to return.

My husband and I visited the Crews Inn this past week and, as usual, we enjoyed our stay very much. Pat was our hostess and she cooked the most wonderful breakfasts. It is such a relaxing place to visit and unwind.
