RV camping at the southern tip of Hatteras Island, minutes from the Ocracoke ferry
Hatteras Sands Campground sits at the southern tip of Hatteras Island, in Hatteras village where NC-12 finally runs out at the ferry docks. It's an RV park set up for travelers using the village as a base for surf fishing, beach walks, and the short hop across to Ocracoke Island on the free state ferry. The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and the villages of Avon and Buxton are a straightforward drive north up NC-12, making the campground workable as a base for exploring more of the seashore too.
For site types, hookup availability, and current rates, call ahead or check the campground's website directly — details can change season to season. Like the rest of Hatteras Island, this stretch sits low and exposed, so it's worth checking road and weather conditions on NC-12 before a trip during hurricane season (roughly June through November).

This was our second time staying at Hatteras Sands. The cottages are comfy and perfect! We enjoyed the pool and game room. The pool, grounds, bathroom/shower areas are kept clean and there’s no doubt the workers take pride in making sure the guests are happy! See you next year!! Be sure to enjoy breakfast at Sonny’s Restaurant nearby!

We stayed again at Hatteras Sands (7/18-7/25/26) and had a great time! Cassandra is super and again recommended several places to eat and things to do! Ask about Scratchmade Snackery and try their pecan pie bars! Go to the Happy Belly for ice cream! I would camp here all the time except for my 14 hours drive time with my camper! The only unfortunate thing was it rained almost every day and quite hard. The closed the road onto the island on Friday before we were supposed to leave. They opened it Friday late afternoon and we were able to leave on Saturday but the main road was still flooded, but we made it without any difficulty just go slow!
