Holiday Inn Express Kitty Hawk – Outer Banks by IHG
A no-fuss IHG stay on Croatan Highway in Kitty Hawk, close to the beach and Wright Brothers history
About
The Holiday Inn Express Kitty Hawk sits on N Croatan Hwy (US-158), the corridor that runs the length of the northern Outer Banks beach towns, putting guests within easy reach of both the Atlantic beaches and the sound side. Kitty Hawk is the quietest and most northern of the three core beach towns here, a step removed from the summer crowds in Nags Head and Kill Devil Hills while still close enough to reach either in minutes.
As part of the IHG family, this property follows the brand's familiar formula: consistent rooms, an on-site fitness facility, and a straightforward stay that works for road-trippers, business travelers, and families splitting their days between the beach, Jockey's Ridge, and the Wright Brothers National Memorial — both landmarks a short drive south in Nags Head and Kill Devil Hills.
- Near Kitty Hawk's kite shops and watersports outfitters
- A quick drive to Jockey's Ridge State Park and the Wright Brothers National Memorial
- On-site fitness facility for guests keeping up a routine while traveling
Shoulder season (April-May, September-October) means lighter traffic on Croatan Highway and easier parking at nearby beach accesses, while Memorial Day through Labor Day is Kitty Hawk at its busiest. Hurricane season runs June through November, with the higher-risk stretch in August through October, so anyone booking during those months should keep an eye on the forecast.

Avoid room on first floor. Specifically near housekeeping room. We arrived at 7pm with a reservation and was given room 101. Right near housekeeping and entrance door. Hotel is older so loud. The offered to move us on night two which I appreciate.

Enjoyed everything! We were pleasantly surprised. Outdoor pool, room was nice, very clean and up to date, friendly front desk, ease of parking, close to everything, including the beach! Walking distance to a couple of great restaurants and the beach!

Update: On the last day of our trip we opened the microwave for the first time and it is full of wet moldy napkins. Hasn't been cleaned in weeks by the look of it. Location is great, right next to the beach. Service is pretty good, staff is kind of robotic and the housekeepers complain loudly in the hallways in the mornings about who is responsible for what rooms. Apparently nobody is responsible for the first room we got because there was bacon grease all over the air conditioner, the window sill was disgusting and covered in dust/mold, and there were water stains on the walls from the AC I'm assuming. They switched us to another room, and while it was better, the toilet paper holder is falling out of the wall and the air conditioning unit sounds like a fighter jet taking off. Not the end of the world, but not something I'd expect from a big name hotel like this. Breakfast was also subpar, poorly stocked and the pancake machine was flashing a service code and unusable. Been using this specific hotel for years, but we'll be finding alternative lodging for our next trip.
