Island Hide-A-Way Campground

Island Hide-A-Way Campground sits on Buxton Back Road, a residential lane set back from NC-12 in the village of Buxton, on Hatteras Island within Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Buxton is home to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, the tallest brick lighthouse in the country, and to the Buxton Woods Coastal Reserve, one of the last substantial maritime forests left on the Outer Banks — both a short drive from the campground, along with the village's restaurants, shops, and beach accesses.

Hatteras Island runs narrower and more exposed than the beaches to the north, and NC-12 is the single road connecting its villages — it can close during storms, a regular feature of life here rather than a rare event. Hurricane season runs June through November, with the highest risk from August through October, so it's worth checking road and weather conditions before a stay. Note too that the lighthouse is currently closed for climbing while the Park Service addresses a cast-iron bracket issue found during restoration.
