Vacation Rental

Kite Club Hatteras

Soundside lodging built around Hatteras Island's kiteboarding scene

About

Kite Club Hatteras sits on North End Rd in Avon, on the soundside stretch of Hatteras Island long known as one of the best kiteboarding grounds on the East Coast. The shallow, wind-fed flats of Pamlico Sound here give riders consistent, mostly onshore wind and flat water that's forgiving for learning and rewarding for more experienced riders looking for a fast reach without ocean chop underfoot.

The property operates as a vacation rental with an on-site shop component for kiteboarding gear, geared toward guests building a trip around the water rather than treating it as one activity among several. That makes it more of a fit for a group of riders splitting a house near the launch than a standard beach-week rental.

Good to know

  • Located in Avon on Hatteras Island, within Cape Hatteras National Seashore
  • NC-12 is the only road connecting Avon to the rest of the island, so it's worth checking current road conditions before a trip
  • Shoulder season (April-May, September-October) tends to bring reliable wind without the hurricane-season uncertainty of peak summer
  • Open daily, 9am to 8pm
  • Call (202) 549-7693 or check the club's website for booking and current conditions

Wow, what a great time. My two brothers and I brought our families to learn how to kiteboard. We stayed onsite (at the Turtle House) and could walk down to the docks for lessons. The weather was a little iffy some of the time but Rick and the guys were very communicative about when we could get out on the water and taught a broad range of ages (12 - 50) and skill levels. The house is very convenient to Avon’s main drag and is secluded enough you aren’t hearing traffic, etc. I’d recommend it for anyone interested in spending time on OBX or hoping to learn how to kiteboard.

If you are looking to learn how to Kite Surf or want a great getaway in the Outer Banks only choose Kite Club Hatteras. The instructors are top notch, very professional, and knowledgeable. You immediately feel a home away from home when you are there everyone makes you feel like family from the moment you arrive to the moment you depart. Whether hanging out on the dock or learning to kite surf you will not be disappointed! My partner and I have been camping on property and taking lessons from the talented Rick. We now will go no where else!

I recently had three sessions with KCH and couldn't be more pleased with my experience. I spent time with Alex and James who took me via jetski or skiff out to wide open, waist deep spots. They were both excellent instructors able to assess my skill level and help me progress faster than I was expecting. During my last session I was confidently staying upwind and working on transitions. I considered several other kiting companies and KCH offers the best combination of personalized attention, great location, and most reasonable pricing. Thanks Christo, Alex and James, I had a great time and will return again soon. Reid
