Lady of Dare

Lady of Dare is a vacation rental home on Ocean View Drive in Avon, one of the strung-out villages that make up Hatteras Island, entirely within Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Like most vacation homes along this stretch, it puts guests within reach of NC-12, the single road connecting every village on the island, from the Rodanthe-Waves-Salvo cluster to the north down through Buxton and Hatteras village to the south.

Staying in Avon

Because Avon sits on a narrower, more exposed section of the barrier island than the beaches to the north, NC-12 here does close during storms, particularly in hurricane season (June through November, with the real risk window running August through October). Shoulder season — April and May, or September and October — tends to be the most comfortable stretch for a stay. From Avon, it's a short drive south to Buxton, home to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse (currently closed for climbing), and further on to Hatteras village, where the free NC ferry departs for Ocracoke Island.
