After our hotel in Virginia Beach didn't work out we drove another couple of hours to Kill Devil Hills to regroup. Ended up in this little Gem. So comfortable and so friendly.

Urine-soaked bed, a manager who called me a liar, and a parting threat of “bad karma”. We checked in around 11 PM and within minutes found the bed soaked in urine — strong and unmistakable, through the sheets into the mattress, right where my 7-year-old had laid his head. When I reported it, the “front desk” turned out to be a video screen with a remote worker. The on-site housekeeping manager refused to believe me, repeated that it was “impossible,” and even invited me to the laundry room to watch her wash sheets. We didn’t feel comfortable staying and left within ten minutes. They refused a refund, sent me to Hotels.com, and the next day again insisted the room was clean. When I mentioned leaving an honest review, an employee told me I’d receive “bad karma.” No apology, no accountability. Avoid.

THE BED SMELLED STRONGLY OF PEE. My family checked in after 10 pm, exhausted from a day of driving. We went to our room and our 7-yr-old noticed a strong smell of pee after putting his head on the bed. We smelled to confirm and there was indeed an offensively strong, unmistakable smell of urine that soaked through the linens to the mattress. We did not feel comfortable staying, unsure of what else we might find so we spoke to someone, unwilling to process a refund who also told us it was impossible that there would be an issue w/ the room (pretty much calling us a liar instead of apologizing and checking what was going on). Terrible customer service. We were offered another room but, at that point, we did not feel comfortable staying and wanted to leave, especially when the staff was unwilling to believe us and were rude and unapologetic. Today, after calmly pursing a refund for a room that we did not use, I spoke to an employee and was told we were lying about a smell in the room and, in return lied to us about staff offering to check our room to confirm the smell. I do not understand how we would be lying about something like this late at night when we were tired and just wanting to sleep in a clean bed. When I said I'd be leaving a bad review if they wouldn't make it right, I was told that I would be receiving "BAD KARMA." Crazy. Also, front desk was a video terminal of a remote worker. They clearly don't care about providing good service. Avoid this place.

Booked through Airbnb was pleasantly surprised how nice this place is. It is very convenient to a public beach access. They do allow pets although we did not have one with us. I would highly recommend Ocean Sands.

This place was so clean and so thoughtful set up. The beach access is super convenient too. I forgot my toothbrush and they had a locker full of any extra complimentary things for free! I loved the free water bottles as well. I will definitely be booking this again.
