Getting to Ocracoke

There's no bridge or road link to the rest of the Outer Banks. Most visitors arrive on the free NC ferry from Hatteras village (about an hour), though longer toll ferries also run from Cedar Island and Swan Quarter on the mainland (roughly 2.25 hours each). Reserve your ferry crossing before you settle anything else about the trip, and if you're traveling during hurricane season — June through November, with the real risk window in August, September, and October — keep an eye on the forecast, since evacuations and ferry suspensions happen on Ocracoke more readily than almost anywhere else on the Outer Banks.

Once you're in the village, Silver Lake Harbor, the Ocracoke Lighthouse, and Springer's Point are all within walking or easy biking distance, with the island's beaches and the pony pasture a short drive north on NC-12.
