A simple Buxton stay near the lighthouse, the national seashore, and the surf
Swell Motel sits on NC-12 in Buxton, one of the strung-out villages that make up Hatteras Island, a narrower, more exposed barrier island than the beaches farther north and one that sits entirely inside Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Buxton is best known as the home of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, the tallest brick lighthouse in the country, moved inland in 1999 to escape encroaching erosion, and for the maritime forest of Buxton Woods just off the highway. From here it's a short drive to surf breaks, soundside flats, and the NPS's numbered beach ramps that allow 4x4 access with an ORV permit — a setup that's fairly rare on the Outer Banks, since beach driving isn't permitted on the core beaches to the north.

My family & I loved our stay at Swell Motel! The staff was extremely nice and welcoming the very moment I walked into the office, till when I handed the keys to them. Even though we were right across from the ocean the kids rather stay at the pool, which was perfect temperature and clean! We look forward to using the kayaks on our next visit!! Thank you Swell Motel ❤️

I've been staying on the island since 97' I honestly couldn't tell you of a better location to stay at if you aren't a bougie individual. They offer everything! From gas grills ( with flattops) horseshoes, ice machines, access to bicycles, a little dog park for tiny dogs. Other than the clean rooms and the very comfortable beds. The best part was the free kayaks. That's you could take on the Sound. The ladies in the office and the ones that did the housekeeping.. are some of the most pleasant individuals ever. They also found my girlfriend's earring in our bed after we left. They mailed her a single earring! That southern hospitality my friends.💯✌️

I love going to the Swell Motel! The people are so friendly and helpful. We drink a lot of coffee and Laura always gives us a supply! I can walk to the ocean from there as well as walk to get pizza, ice cream, and seafood! I love walking down to the tidal waters to watch the sunset. If you’re active, there are kayaks and bicycles to use for free.

We weren’t sure what to expect, but we were impressed from the moment we met the owners at check-in. The process was easy, and the 'pull-up-to-your-room' parking was very convenient. Our room was spacious, clean, and featured modern renovations that made for a great night's sleep. Location-wise, there is a great selection of restaurants within easy walking distance. While the property isn't directly on the beach, it’s just a very short drive away. A huge bonus was the free use of bicycles and kayaks! If we visit the area again, this will definitely be our first choice for accommodations.

WOW, just wow. 5 night stay, 1 of the most enjoyable stays we've ever had. Charming older motel with clean, modern, comfortable rooms. Great location. Good amenities. And most of all, the people. EVERYONE, the owner, the desk clerks, the maids, were all so friendly and helpful that we didn't just feel welcome, we felt like honored guests. And also worth mentioning, Diamond Shoals and Angelos restaurants right across the street, and miniature golf and Ice Cream next door.
