The Atlantic Inn is a bed-and-breakfast-style stay in Hatteras village, the southernmost of Hatteras Island's strung-out villages and the departure point for the free NC ferry to Ocracoke. It sits directly on NC-12, the single road that runs the length of the island — a road that closes or washes out during storms with some regularity, a real and ongoing feature of life here rather than a rare event.
Hatteras village itself is a working harbor town built around its charter fishing fleet, with restaurants, shops, and marinas within easy reach. Staying at the island's southern end puts guests a comfortable drive from the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in Buxton — the tallest brick lighthouse in the country, though currently closed to climbing during an ongoing restoration — and close to the dock for anyone continuing on to Ocracoke.
Hatteras Island is narrower and more exposed than the beaches to the north, and the villages here run on a slower, more local rhythm. Peak season runs Memorial Day through Labor Day, with April, May, September, and October offering quieter shoulder-season stays; hurricane season, roughly June through November, is worth watching for anyone booking in advance.
