The Inn on Pamlico Sound

Soundside lodging in Buxton, minutes from Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and the national seashore

About

The Inn on Pamlico Sound sits on NC-12 in Buxton, facing the sound side of Hatteras Island rather than the open ocean — a quieter stretch of shoreline with wide water views and easy sunset watching. As a vacation rental property, it puts guests within a short drive of Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and the beaches of Cape Hatteras National Seashore, all reached by the single road that threads the length of the island.

Getting Around

  • NC-12 is the only road connecting Buxton to the rest of Hatteras Island, so it's worth building a little flexibility into travel plans, especially around storms.
  • The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, the tallest brick lighthouse in the US, is a short drive away — note that climbing is currently closed while the National Park Service addresses a structural issue with the cast-iron support brackets.
  • Much of the seashore's beach allows 4x4/ORV driving with an NPS permit, another reason Buxton draws anglers and beach campers who want to get away from crowded access points.

Planning Around Hurricane Season

Hurricane season on the Outer Banks runs June through November, with August through October carrying the highest real risk, and Hatteras Island floods and loses road access more readily than the beaches farther north. Guests booking a stay anywhere in this window should keep an eye on NC-12 conditions and forecasts in the days before arrival.

For rates, availability, and specific unit details, contact the inn directly at (252) 995-7030 or through its website.

Went for a special family dinner. We had 'Herb' as our server and he was professional and funny and took good care of us. The food was really good and came out fast. Yes, the prices are higher then places we usually go but we wanted to try a fancy restaurant environment. Had a great meal and portions were good

We spent a few nights at the Inn for a family wedding and had a fantastic time! Steve and his team were incredibly welcoming and attentive during our stay. The housekeeping staff even took the time to tuck our daughter's stuffed animals in when they made up the beds. The Inn has great access to the sound and we enjoyed the paddleboards and other equipment provided. We heard only positive comments about the Inn from other guests in our party.

Fantastic place to stay with plenty of amenities, like kayaks, paddle boards and a pool. The restaurant is the best in the area without a doubt. My room was very clean, comfortable and easy to access. I will definitely be back and the origin story of the establishment is impressive!

This beautiful property is an absolute heaven on earth! My family spent several nights at the Inn and we enjoyed the Cafe for meals while visiting. The location, the people, the food, and the accommodations are second to none!!! Thank you so much for the hospitality and setting the tone for a wonderful vacation!!
