The Tranquil House Inn sits right on Queen Elizabeth Avenue, the street that traces Shallowbag Bay through downtown Manteo. That puts it about as central as lodging gets on Roanoke Island: the marina, the shops and restaurants of the historic waterfront district, and the harborfront walkway are all a short stroll away, a different rhythm entirely from the barrier-island beach towns across the Washington Baum Bridge.

Getting oriented on Roanoke Island

The island's cluster of historic sites on the north end — Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, Elizabethan Gardens, Roanoke Island Festival Park, and the Waterside Theatre, where The Lost Colony outdoor drama has run each summer for decades — are a short drive from downtown. A waterfront stay in Manteo makes it easy to spend a few days working through that history, including the still-unresolved disappearance of the 1580s Roanoke Colony, without needing to backtrack through the beach towns each day.

The Tranquil Inn is a charming place to stay. The rooms are great, staff is friendly and efficient and our dinner in Reatuarant 1587 was outstanding. The breakfast could be better. We did love our stay.

Me and my fiancée decided to take a trip and we booked with the Tranquil house inn. We were supposed to stay with them from July 22nd - 24th unfortunately we had to cut the trip short because of personal matters and because of inclement weather conditions. I stated that I understand if we couldn’t get our money back since we had to leave the 23rd the morning around 10:14am but the person at the front desk said that we could and issued the refund but now they are not up holding on this issue and nothing paying up. So I’ve had to take matters into my own hands about this and it’s just sad. The hotel was great but everything else like the service just wasn’t up to par and they haven’t made any move or choice to make it better and make things right. Unfortunately for this reason I can’t recommend the tranquil house Inn.
