Thurston House Inn sits in Ocracoke village, the only settlement on this ferry-only island at the southern tip of the Outer Banks. There's no bridge or road connection here — visitors arrive via the free NC ferry from Hatteras village (about an hour) or the longer toll ferries from Cedar Island or Swan Quarter on the mainland (roughly 2.25 hours each), which makes the inn's village location convenient once you've made the crossing.

Steps from the harbor

The inn is close to Silver Lake Harbor, putting Ocracoke's village-based landmarks within easy reach. Springer's Point, a preserved maritime forest traditionally linked to Blackbeard's final battle in Ocracoke Inlet in 1718, is a short walk away, as is Ocracoke Lighthouse. Built in 1823, it's the second-oldest operating lighthouse in the country and the oldest in North Carolina — worth a look up close, though it has never been open for public climbing.

Beyond the village

Heading north on NC-12, the island turns to undeveloped National Park Service land within Cape Hatteras National Seashore, with numbered beach-access ramps (an NPS permit is required for beach driving) and a fenced pasture where Ocracoke's wild ponies — a distinct population from the horses found further north on the Outer Banks — are kept and can be viewed.

One note for planning: Ocracoke's remoteness and lack of a bridge evacuation route make it especially vulnerable during hurricane season (June through November, with the real risk window in August-October) — mandatory evacuations and ferry suspensions happen here more readily than almost anywhere else on the Outer Banks.

Thurston House was the perfect spot for my first summer sabbatical to the island. Communication from the hosts was prompt, clear, warm and inviting making this solo traveler feel at home and at ease. The room was comfortable and cool and the perfect spot to rest between my many wandering adventures around the island. I loved that I could walk everywhere and never had too far to go to get back to home base. Highly recommend for other travelers!

I had such a lovely stay!! Hunter and Olivia went above and beyond to make sure I had a great visit. Additionally, the house and room have been updated beautifully. I already want to go back!

Our family traveled to Ocracoke to celebrate my mother-in-law’s 80th birthday. It was our first time on the island, and our first time at Thurston House. We LOVED IT! Olivia and Hunter and their sweet family were the most lovely hosts. Welcoming and accommodating. The rooms are beautiful and comfortable. You feel like you’re part of history without compromising amenities. The perfect setting for a long weekend of relaxation. Can’t wait to go back!

I stayed here this week for a solo trip to rest and unwind. Everything was phenomenal! The perfect location in the heart of Ocracoke and I could walk or ride the provided bike everywhere. The new owners curated this place with such intentionality and care. The house itself is beautiful and gave me a taste of the islands history and character. The room, bathrooms, and common areas were clean and well kept. They also provided coffee and breakfast snacks every morning which was a cute touch. Very grateful for my stay and for Hunter and Olivia for hosting me! Highly recommend and I will definitely be back!
