Yaupon Inn

A Buxton vacation rental on Old Lighthouse Road, close to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse grounds

Buxton, NC

About

Yaupon Inn sits on Old Lighthouse Road in Buxton, the short stretch that runs out toward the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse grounds and the beaches near Cape Point. As a vacation rental, it puts you within easy reach of Buxton's restaurants, tackle shops, and surf breaks, plus everything else this hub village of Hatteras Island has to offer.

Buxton sits inside Cape Hatteras National Seashore, and the lighthouse itself — the tallest brick lighthouse in the country, moved inland in 1999 to outrun the eroding shoreline — is currently closed to climbing while a cast-iron bracket issue found during restoration gets addressed, with that closure expected to run through at least the end of 2026. The grounds and surrounding area are still worth a walk even without the climb.

Like the rest of Hatteras Island, this stretch depends on NC-12 as its only road connection, and that road can close during storms, so it's worth checking conditions before a trip in hurricane season (June through November, with August through October carrying the real risk here). For current rates, availability, and check-in details, contact Yaupon Inn directly at (252) 305-5091 or through its website.

We Truly love staying at the Yaupon Inn. Betsy is an amazing innkeeper. The rooms are immaculate and the beds so comfortable. The shared kitchen is a bonus and there are all the cookware you'll ever need. Internet works great. Nice rocking chairs under shade at your entrance door. You cannot ask for a nicer stay. Rooms are just right for 2 people to enjoy a relaxing weekend. Eateries are close by. Recommend Cockeyed Clam for a semi upscale Dining experience. Angelos Pizza is great for lunch and ice cream and has a game room. Diamond Shoals has a great breakfast. All within a very short walk. Next road up is the entrance to the Lighthouse, beaches and off road ramps to drive on the beach.

Exceptionally clean rooms and a short 3 minute walk to a public beach. Our stay was quiet and peaceful. Couldn’t ask for more.

I had a fantastic stay at Betsy's place! The room was exactly as described, perfectly clean, and just a short walk from the ocean. The kitchen was well-equipped for cooking meals, but I also loved the convenience of being within walking distance to great restaurants. Betsy was an amazing host, always attentive and thoughtful, and her morning coffee was a delightful touch.
