hattiebuilt Jeep Rentals operates right on NC-12 in Avon, the stretch of Hatteras Island where four-wheel-drive vehicles genuinely earn their keep. Cape Hatteras National Seashore allows off-road vehicle access on much of the island with an NPS ORV permit, and a rental Jeep is the practical way to reach the sand for surf fishing, sunrise walks, or a stretch of beach away from the nearest paved parking area. Avon's position partway down the island also makes a rental here a convenient way to cover ground toward Buxton and Hatteras village to the south.

Open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The NPS ORV permit needed for beach driving is separate from the rental itself — confirm current permit requirements before you plan a beach day.
NC-12 is the single road connecting Avon to the rest of Hatteras Island and does close during storms, so it's worth checking conditions during hurricane season (roughly August through October) before pickup.

Staff was at first friendly when we spoke to them, but horribly rude when we returned the vehicle. Complained and charged us extra because there was still sand in the Jeep after we vacuumed it. Absurd to think there would be sand in a vehicle rented at a beach! Will not be renting from them again and would not recommend if you plan on actually using the Jeep.

Thank you for a great experience. Brand new Jeep. We were able to rent it hourly just for the morning which was perfect for us. I would highly recommend!

Brand new jeeps, rented 3 for the day. They were spotless, worked great, even had CarPlay! Soft tops were easily taken down and up and the whole experience was awesome. Would highly recommend and we will be back, again!

We had a fantastic experience renting from Hattiebuilt. They provided a clean vehicle that had the space we needed. They also suggested a great place to go for shelling based on current conditions (I'm not sharing it here... you need to go rent from them to get that). Great location with coffee and other shops close by and super friendly owners. Will be renting from them again.
