Silver Lake Harbor

Silver Lake Harbor is the historic anchorage at the southwest tip of Ocracoke Island, where the village curves around a round, sheltered basin instead of a straight shoreline. This is where boats have moored for centuries, and it's still the first thing most visitors see: the free NC ferry from Hatteras and the longer toll runs from Cedar Island and Swan Quarter all dock here, alongside charter fishing boats, sailboats, and day-trip vessels tied along the docks and bulkheads that ring the water.

The center of the village

Walking or biking the loop around the harbor is the easiest way to get oriented in Ocracoke village, with shops, restaurants, and inns clustered along its edges. Springer's Point, the preserved maritime forest at the edge of the village long associated with Blackbeard, sits just a short walk from the harbor.

Remote by nature

Because Ocracoke has no bridge or road connection, Silver Lake Harbor is more than scenic; it's the island's lifeline, with nearly everything and everyone moving through this water. That same isolation makes Ocracoke especially vulnerable during hurricane season: mandatory evacuations and ferry suspensions can shut the harbor down more readily than almost anywhere else on the Outer Banks.
